Week 7 Recount

Week 7 by Ryan

This week Team Tui was doing science. We had lots of fun following air pressure.

The first experiment was the candle in a glass – more on that later, and the second one was the hair dryer and ping pong balls. Team Tui also did volleyball which was really enjoyable

For the hair dryer experiment we had to turn on a hair dryer and balance a ping pong ball on the air coming out of the dryer. My group managed to get three ping pong balls on the air waves but only for a second – because the other two balls stopped the air flow – but we still managed to do it.

For the candle glass experiment we stuck a candle bottom to the plate using candle wax then poured water into the dish. Then we lit the candle and stuck the glass over the top of the candle and some of the water. The end result was the water rising inside the cup and after a while the candle went out because there wasn’t enough oxygen.

On Thursday we played volleyball for Kelly Sports. It was really nice because in my team there were my friends and some of the best players. It was very enjoyable. We did not win any of our games but we were close.

This week was one of the best weeks ever. Thanks to Mr Victor for teaching us this week while our teacher was away.

Floatation experiment

Item My Prediction Actual Outcome My Reason
Kiwifruit It will sink sank Because it is heavy and there are no gaps in it.
Lemon We predicted that the leoman Float Half and half so half sink half float,  Because of the skin witch was the only thing keeping the citrus fruit afloat and because of the actual fruit which was to have to stay afloat it was half and half
Mandarin We predicted that the Mandarin would float Half and half as well.  Because it is something light and the skin is keeping it afloat.
Orange We predicted that the orange would Float It all sank but the top bit of the orange. The orange was heavy and the skin kept it afloat so only about a quarter of the orange stayed out of the water

Air pressure experiment

Title: Air pressure experiment

Purpose:

To have a look at how vacuum and air pressure works

Hypothesis/Prediction (What I think will happen and why?)

I think that the water in side the glass will rise

Equipment/Materials

Water

A deep dish

Candles

Matchs

Food colour

Glass tall enough to house a candle

Method

Stick the candle onto the center of the plate using candle wax then put water onto the plate and around the candle then add 2 drops of food colouring to the water. Then you light the candle and add the glass on top.

Discussion

My group wanted to try with 2 candles but we did not get round to it

Conclusion

This was a very fun experiment explaining air preesure
